Joint Research

The joint research activities cover several important issues such as harmonisation and standardisation of analytical methods, assessment of advanced processing and monitoring technologies implemented in modern HACCP systems and development of a database for food safety hazards as well as socio-economic research.

Harmonisation and Standardisation of Analytical Methods

MoniQA aims to develop harmonisation guidelines for risk assessment and standardisation of detection methods and technologies in food safety and quality. In order to achieve this goal, groups will be set up to facilitate communication between the different fields of expertise and practitioners, and to provide input into harmonisation strategies and standardisation. The resulting information will be used to develop new harmonised protocols and procedures.

Advanced processes and ICT technologies

Another area of joint research is assessing the implications of advanced processing and monitoring technologies implemented in modern HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) systems. MoniQA will identify and prioritise gaps and needs for future food quality and safety research in this respect.

Food Safety Hazards Database

MoniQA will develop a database of food quality and safety issues and corresponding analytical tools for food production and the supply chain. This database includes information on the validation level and a thesaurus of terms and definitions used in standardisation/ validation of analytical methods. The databases should be useful for food authorities, for installing alert systems (within a food manufacturing plant, but also on a wider scope including national and international alert and action procedures). Making the databases compatible with various IT interfaces will make the data useful for all kinds of food authorities.

Socio-economical impact and cost efficiency

MoniQA will perform a systematic assessment of new EU food quality and safety regulations with respect to industry, control and regulatory bodies. Specific attention is paid to the socio-economic impact in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and consistency, administrative costs as well as the impact on international trade.
